Student Success Specialist

Wesley Walsman serves as a Student Success Specialist for the Community College of the District of Columbia. Fluent in Spanish and proficient in Portuguese, he specializes in helping Hispanic students identify and take advantage of the opportunities and resources they need to achieve academic and career success. For each student, he provides individual attention and guidance toward course completion and graduation.
Mr. Walsman brings a variety of experience in working with Washington’s Hispanic/Latino community. Most recently, he served as a bilingual resident service coordinator for Jubilee Housing, providing low-income residents with financial literacy classes and counseling, information about first-time homeownership programs, and translation assistance. He also worked as a community outreach specialist for CentroNía, working with partner and community-based organizations to find resources for Latino families and providing them with tax return, housing, employment, and health service assistance.
As a family support worker at The Family Place, Mr. Walsman identified employment, housing, and education resources for clients; developed case management plans and family profiles for clients with limited English proficiency; and empowered clients to exercise their tenant’s rights. He also taught English as a second language to 25 Latino adults. In addition, as a student Mr. Walsman was an employment specialist intern in Mexico City, helping workers to locate jobs, teaching career workshops, researching 20 micro-finance institutions to compare interest rates and loan sizes for self-employed clients.
Mr. Walsman has a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Brigham Young University. He has completed 40 hours of interpreting training with Multicultural Community Services in Washington, D.C.
