June 15, 2011 - In Spring 2011 Gap Inc. and the UDC Community College (UDC-CC) partnered as a part of President Obama’s Skills for America’s Future program, an initiative to improve industry partnerships with community colleges to ensure that America’s community college students are gaining the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in the workforce.
UDC-CC students eagerly signed up for Gap for Community Colleges, as it provided hands-on training and real world experience. Local Gap managers conducted multiple career preparation workshops on-site for UDC-CC students, which focused on identifying job opportunities, learning how to communicate effectively in the workplace, and time management. The program included mock interviews, job shadowing at Gap stores, and the opportunity to receive a scholarship from Gap Inc.
At the end of the semester, UDC-CC and Gap Inc. held a reception to honor the 50 students that participated in the program. During the ceremony, ten students were awarded $1,000 Gap scholarships towards tuition and fees. Scholarship applicants submitted essays detailing how the workshops prepared them to reach and excel in their career goals.
Eva Sage-Gavin, Executive Vice President of Global Human Resources and Corporate Affairs indicated, "We are pleased to partner with the UDC Community College. For more than 40 years, Gap Inc. has been committed to improving education in the communities where we live and work. We are proud to participate in this White House initiative and expand our job training programs to more cities to support efforts to improve the economy. Our hope is that Gap for Community Colleges can be part of the solution to improve workforce competitiveness here in the U.S."
Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, CEO of UDC-CC, noted the value of this partnership in stating, “This program has provided training and coaching for our students that would not have been possible without Gap Inc.” UDC-CC and Gap Inc. plan to continue offering Gap for Community Colleges at UDC-CC in Fall 2011.
