On January 12, 2013, over 300 students from across the city gathered with family and friends for the UDC-CC/WDLL “Celebration of Excellence” recognition ceremony. The semi-annual event, held at Saint Elizabeths Auditorium, proudly acknowledged students participating in Workforce Development and Lifelong Learning programs. Mayor Vincent Gray attended the event, gave words of encouragement and a message about community, employability, upward mobility, and educational growth. The keynote address was delivered by Thomas Penny III, who is the General Manager for the Courtyard Marriott Convention Center. His inspirational speech focused on the idea that anything is possible because “leadership begins with you.” As always, our student speakers were amazing and told their stories of motivation, persistence and success! In closing, Dr. Elaine Crider, Chairman of the UDC Board of Trustees, expressed the importance of education and the impact it has on the society at-large.
The standing room only event featured several highlights. One of the most unforgettable moments was the tribute to WDLL’s fallen students, Selina Brown and Sharod James, who were honored with a certificate and included in the Inaugural Dean’s List. All in all, the event was extraordinarily executed and will be showcased on the DC Office of Cable Television station within a few weeks.
